Buddha is a title bestowed supposedly on a reincarnated person. It means 'enlightened one', and was based on the teachings of an atheist cult, who felt that people were reincarnated until they had learnt all the wonders of the universe, at which time a person would shed their physical body, and become a part of the universe itself. As a result, Buddhists spend as much time as is practical, attempting to gain enlightenment, and to get closer to that particular goal during this lifetime.
The original Buddha has an Indian name, yet it is thought by many non-Buddhists, to actually be derived from the teachings of Lao-Tse, a Chinese philosopher from the time of Confucius (circa 2000BC). The Buddhists are headed up today by the Dalai Lama, who is supposd to be the first Buddha reincarnated, as a presence on earth, although this is undoubtedly a false act implemented by Lama monks for control of the masses. People feel the need for a leader, and all religions like to give their followers just such a person (and that person tends to bless a certain group of people in return); eg Roman Catholicism - the Pope, Church of England - Archbishop of Canterbury, etc. Buddha himself would not approve, because he has no presence on earth, unless he had actually failled to attain Nirvana, in which case everything else he said must be wrong. Also, the Dalai Lama does not allow any woman to look upon his face, whereras the original Buddha felt no difference between men and women, and the Buddha has himself had several female forms, who would not be allowed to look at the Dalai Lama! That is like the Pope saying God is not worthy of looking at him!
The Lama were also a group of monks in China who fought battles with the Shaolin for hundreds of years, before suffering massive defeats, and being forced from China into Tibet. Most martial arts come from Korea, with Japanese and Chinese adaptations coming later.
The buddha statues therefore do not have just one form, but many. The traditional old Buddha is depicted as a fat man, sat down with a bald head and big ears; and if you rub his tummy three times every day, he will bring you luck. There are other forms of Buddha, including, as I mentioned earlier, some female Buddhas, and different areas tend to build statues to whichever form that seems most relevsnt to themselves. There are a great many Buddha statues across South East Asia, though my particular favourite is a reclining Buddha, built on a mountainside North of Bangkok. It is a massive, and awe inspiring statue.

I'm not sure, but if you mean Buddha instead of Buddhd.

Then around 500 BC, there lived a guy named Siddartha Guatama (sp?) and he eventually became the Buddha through trying a bunch of different things.

Buddha means enlightened being. The buddha statues are created by buddha's followers centuries later.

Buddhism originated in what we now know as India. It was started by a guy named Gautama who believed that suffering in the world can be overcome by overcoming desire. He was called the Buddha, which means "enlightened one."
