There are so many things it could be, it is hard to narrow down. Please do see a doctor as soon as possible. After all, you have a new life to care for so it is important for you to take care of yourself physically too. The best doctor may not be your OB/GYN. However, give them a call and see what they think!
In the meanwhile, in case it is carpal tunnel, notice how you are holding the baby/bottles/etc. and your arm/wrist positions while sleeping. Bending your wrist, or angling it to the right or left can aggravate carpal tunnel. Simply keeping it straighter could possibly help with the numbness. Try not to keep elbows bent for too long at a time, which is difficult while holding a baby...maybe let the baby rest on your chest, so you can straighten/relax your arms more often.
You may be using some different muscle groups than you were prior to delivery. The nerve that comes down the side of your neck and shoulder, travels under your armpit and on down your arm to your hand. You may be entrapping the nerve under your armpit by hunching your shoulders forward; this is quite possible due to the way we are prone to hold babies. You might try consciously holding your shoulders back and down, with ears aligned over your shoulders and chin tucked in slightly. (This is what my physical therapist recommended to me. She said many people have nerve problems in their neck all the way to their hands due to the posture of their shoulders/neck.) If it feels uncomfortable when you try that position, it is because the muscles that are supposed to hold us in that position are out of shape. We also hunch forward when we use the computer, eat, and drive. Give it a try.
Best wishes to you, and God be with you and your family.

The research on the web is talking about diabetic neuropathy. It's nerve damage due to uncontrollable blood sugar. I wouldn't think that is your problem unless you had gestational diabeties. This isn't just numb it's also painful, do you have pain? The pain of nueropathy often feels like sharp needlelike pain in addition to the numbness.
It probably isn't the IV, the IV doesn't have anything to do with nerves. Even with a mistake.
Perhaps it's a pinched nerve. Or you have swelling that is pushing on a nerve? It is also possible your blood volume is still high following the pregnancy and could be causing pressure on a nerve.
If it continues just make a quick call to your doctor about it. It never hurts to ask.

Funny you mention that because I had my baby july 2006 and I myself have and still having numbness in my right hand aswell as my entire arm. Sometimes it feels weak with a constant strange pain feeling numbness is very present in my hand though. Yes someone else is experience something similar but I really dont know myself what causing it and no I don't have diabettes either I was tested so if your doctor can figure be sure to let me know because my doctor couldnt figure it out.

I'm not a doctor or anything, but it's possible that when she was pokin' around she may have hit a nerve. That would explain the numbness anyway. Did you notice the numbness after she put in the IV, or did it gradually come on after the IV was removed? Could be temporary nerve damage.

I had that and my doctor suggested it was a combination of things, weight gain and water retention first and foremost. This mimics the carpal tunnel symptoms because it also causes that nerve to be pinched in the same way as it is also swelling. I suppose it is moot really...a wrist splint did help...

Pinched nerve.
It's common to have a pinched nerve after childbirth. The IV could not cause this, especially if the numbness is similar in both hands.
Do not worry, you will be fine. Congratulations.

It may have absolutely nothing to do with what happened during labor and delivery. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can cause tingling and numbness and weakness in your hands....so when you see your doctor, ask about CTS and about getting and EMG to diagnose it...if he agrees.

Are you breast feeding ? It may be partly carpel tunnel. I had the same thing, doctor will blame it on the hormones. I had a splint brace, and it went away after about a week.
