Travel writing is a genre particularly popular in England and Europe throughout the 18th and 19th c. focusing on the exoticism of places like India or the Carribean. Swift's Gulliver's Travels parodies the genre. A memoir focuses specifically on the events of one's own life and is usually shorter and more melodramatic in nature than a typical biography. An epic is a long narrative lyrical poem through which a hero identifies and typifies the values or beliefs of a nation state. Examples include Homer's Iliad and Odyssey as well as Virgil's Anaeid and Alexander Pope's parody of the genre titled The Rape of the Lock.
