You have to chop a few down every year, so you need fast growing trees that provide good heat when burned. You also need to squeeze in the most trees per acre. What are the best trees for this?

Willow to start with because there are some very fast growing varieties. And these are often intended as bio-mass.

Secondly, some birch. Only slightly slower to grow, but these have thicker stems, ie better logs. Pine would also be quick, but would make a mess of your flue pipe soon enough.
You would then have some harder-woods to come on in their own time. Ash burns really nicely, and is reasonably quick growing for a hard wood. You will die of cold waiting for your oaks.

As for acreage, if you can't manage on 5 acres, then put on another pullover.

I hesitate to disagree with the others, but if anyone is listening DO NOT BURN PINE IN YOUR FIREPLACE!!!!!!! The resin from the pine will build up in your chimney and form an ignitable coating. There is no way you can grow timber fast enough to to replenish what you burn. Oak takes hundreds of years to grow. Pecan is not used much because it 'pops' embers ALOT. Your best bet is to use your old growth patches (if you have any) you can cut the smaller oak scrubs and cut any pieces that fall from the large trees naturally. We are always on the lookout for fallen trees and limbs that have fallen in the area. People will usually pay you to cut and remove it from their property. Get paid and get firewood....win-win, for you and the trees that you don't have to cut off of your property
