My husaband and I are at odd's on what to get our son for christmas. Our son wants the Hot Wheels Radar Gun and my husband thinks it's a stupid idea. He says he has nothing to use on it. Everytime we go to the store, my son always finds it and makes sure I see it and says "this is what I want mom". It's only 20 bucks and it's christmas. Am I wrong for fighting for the present for my son. And to answer the small question, my husband is my sons real dad.

If it's only 20 bucks, I would go ahead and get it...especially since it's something he really wants....just imagine how excited he will be on Christmas morning...tell hubby...it will be ok...or just buy it and put it under the tree...you know like Santa did in the Christmas story w/Ralphie's Red Rider!!!

The issue here is not so much whether your son gets the toy in question but whether you and your husband are on the same page with regard to your parenting choices.

Sounds to me as though you and Mr. Cheryl don't agree on how to make these decisions, and might need a few moments of peace and quiet to talk through the pro's and con's of getting vs. passing on this toy.

Perhaps an alternative would be to get your son a gift card at the store where the toy is sold. Make the card for just a bit more, and then let your son decide whether he wants to use his money on the radar gun or would he REALLY rather have something else.

Good luck, and Happy Christmas!

Somewhere, Christmas became all about, "I want, I want." It's encouraging kids to be very selfish, and parents waste a lot of bread on total crap.

I'd tell him he's gonig to get it in advance (yes, ruin the surprise), but also tell him it's the last Christmas gift he can ever request. From now on, everything he gets will be a surprise, and how he hanfles himself will reflect upon all his future Christmas (and birthday) gifts.

and then follow through, no matter how much he tries to manipulate you. Remind yourselves that you're trying to raise a good person, not satisfy a spoiled brat (hopefully he isn't one yet, and this "i want" is just a phase), and in the long run, you're doing the right thing.

Its only $20, just get it, wrap it and put it under the tree without even mentioning it to your husband. Its a silly thing to argue about. If it will make your husband happier about it, get him some hotwheels and track to go with it, so he'll have something to use it on.
