Mother of your three children, you are wasting your time. Knowing their passwords will do you not one bit of good protecting them while they are on line. (Unless you are able to stand over them the complete time they use MSN Messenger).

Plus they can just change their password to a new one without your knowledge.

This link is from my daily BBC NEWS, I rec., daily from London England, Indepth knowledge of how criminals make millions per day an can wipe out your entire life savings, by one bad mistake on your part or your childrens part.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6083818.stm

The next two links are from an agency of the Government of Australia that I rec., info on "zero day attacks or flaws in diff., computer platforms before the security people have knowledge.

Goes into indepth details on how to stay smart. The actual key is "Good Common Sense", has security is only a backup.

For more information on transacting securely online, check out http://www.staysmartonline.gov.au

Hope that after you and your children read the above three links you will all have a real indepth understanding of the danger and how to stay smart when using the internet.

If you children can use the computer it is obvious they can read the links I am going to send you on how to stay safe suring the net. An also how you can get killed or loose your entire life savings by giving out personal information.

Have them read both links.

This link is from my dail BBC News that I rec., daily, from London, England. Was about two week ago. This links describes the danger and how to protect yourself.

I am sure you children don't like you for doing this. If I had children I would do the same. I do have an 18 year old daughter and she shows me everything (as far as i know). Just keep an open door to you children and let them know that you will always be there for them not matter what. More parents should do this as the Internet is a dangerous place.

I think that your children should not go on instant messaging.
I think this because I used to da AIM and MSN but they give the computer viruses.
People that your kids don't even know could talk to them on instant messaging.
Tell your kids they should just do emailing.
Everything has a virus but instant messaging screws up the whole computer.
I hope I answered your question.

their password will do you no good though unless you just want to log on as them and see what people at that time are going to say to them, but unless logging is supported and enabled you won't be able to know past conversations or anything. i'm not really sure of your "safety plan" concerning IM's, but usually parents want to know what conversations have taken place, even though i don't support this kind of invasion of privacy i can understand it.
for this kind of stuff i would recommend net nanny: http://www.netnanny.com/ it's got a lot of options including website blocking, IM loggin, so it can block porn or any other content you decide to cripple the 1st amendment with.
if you're only want to log IM's go here to find the chat logging software that sounds the best, there are reviews here as well http://www.spy-tools-directory.com/spy-software/chat-logger-software.html

It's nice to know that there are still some responsible parents out there, thank you!

I see to many kids on-line in places they should not be like adult chat rooms. You have just given me hope!

However, you have only taken the first step, you still need to keep your eyes on them if they are young. There are allot of very nasty people on the net.

We need to protect our children at all cost, they are our future!

They'll give you a password but they'll also have some secret ones. You can "ask" for anything you want, but thinking that's all of it, is a fool's paradise.

Oh, no, you are ABSOLUTLY RIGHT. Monitor everything. YOU ARE THE PARENT. my daughter is 20, so I just missed IM & MySpace, but beeeeelieve me, I would have set all kinds of limits. (oh- and I'm the "cool mom")

sounds fine to me, just don't make a daily discussion of what are supposed to be their private messages, only bring up stuff if it's really trouble
