I live in Alabama and i'm going to Woodbridge, Virginia,v which is near Washington DC. I have to get a fairly thick jacket so I won't freeze my toes off. I'm not really used to very cold weather because where I live the weather is unpredictable. Please give me some suggestions.

because the weather is unpredictable this time of year bring a standard jacket which has some insulation but more importantly bring gloves and hat you can take on and off easily. These alone will do as much as the jacket to keep you comfortable.

Get yourself a 3/4 length coat, either a wool mix or sheepskin. You'll be set up for winter :-) I can't live without mine now - I have a sheep's wool one AND a fabulous llama wool one.

For me, a fleece is a good general purpose coat. Available from outdoor stores. Warm and lightweight.

One thing that helps is to dress in layers - so make sure a nice warm sweater will fit under your new coat.

I'd also suggest gloves or mittens, and a scarf.
