Why is it ok for women to be lesbians if they are good looking but when they are butch they seem to frighten many people!!!

because men like the idea of two good looking women doing stuff together but when it's two butch women they yuk

Why is everyone giving all these negative stereotypes to butch women? That they are mean, and intimidating?
Look, before I transitioned to male, I was considered a "butch lesbian". I also dated OTHER butch lesbians. And for the most part, you are right...the "sexy" femme lesbians together are always ok in everyone's eyes, probably because that's the male fantasy and what they depict in porns and s**t. I always got a lot of s**t from people when they saw two masculine-ish women together. But two femmes were always ok. Never quite understood that one.
However, NOT all butches are the mean, intimidating, large type. I know PLENTY of thin, attractive butch lesbians. "Butch" is not a look, it's an ATTITUDE and a DEMEANOR. I know large women, small women, sporty women, nice women, (and yes some mean ones too). And NOOO they don't want to be men, at least not most of them. I know a lot of HOT butch women that get hit on by gay men all the time, because they take care of themselves, have a very stylish manner of dress, and have very high maintenance grooming habits. I know butches that are VERY intelligent, cultured, and open minded as well. You really gotta look past the exterior. Butch lesbians have been some of the most REAL people I've ever met in my life. Many I've met have been kind, compassionate, caring, VERY protective of those they love, responsible, and they take care of their buisiness. Most aren't about drama, vindictiveness and other immature B.S. There as as many different types of butch lesbians as there are other groups of people, like gay men, and femme lesbians. Just like not all gay men are campy and "fabulous", not all butches are mean, large, and intimidating.
Before I transitioned, I was never called "mean" or "intimidating". Instead, I was called "adorable" or "cute" or a "sweetheart", but..I was still given the "butch" label.
Shame on all you in the gay community who feel this way about butch lesbians. You're doing the same thing you HATE in others. You're stereotyping and judging a group of people before you EVER get to know them. Isn't that the same thing you scream about in your parades about the heterosexuals and right wing Christian fundamentalists? Hey, before you point a finger next time, remember you always have 3 more pointing right back at you.

Sadly, it's because of aesthetics. I'm going out with a very tall, very skinny girl who's not stereotypically 'butch', but not exactly femme either.
She's very much a 'like me for what I am or hate me, but you'll never change me' person, but she's very sweet and affectionate to me, as well as being chivalrous (That *is* similar to being gentlemanly, right?)
Sorry, back to the question.
As far as I'm concerned, lesbians are lesbians and their personalities (and looks) can vary as much as the straight community's. I must also mention that I like some butches and I like some femmes. It depends on the person themselves, really.

It's true that straight society is more accepting of girly lesbians. But if you get out in the lesbian community you'll see that lots of lesbians like butch girls! I have a big, butch girlfriend and would trade her for no other.

There are plenty of good looking butch lesbians, and also plenty of utter growlers.
Much the same as for any group of people, male or female, gay or straight.

Because to straight men, 2 hot, girly girls = two for the price of one, whereas Butch girls = scary, wannabe-men (possibly competition also!)
