By 'Anglo settlers', I take it you mean 'Europeans', 'White folk'.

The Spanish. 'Texas' is a Spanish word.

Spain conquered the Caribbean Islands, including Puerto Rico, and Cuba, and Central America, and moved North and West, to conquer Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Utah (later re-conquered), and on to California and Nevada, in North America.

Of course, Spain conquered all of South America, except for Brazil, which was a Portuguese colony.
