"Outing" is revealing someone's sexual preference to other people or the public at large without their knowledge or consent.

I have to write a brief paper for a sociology class on this subject. I know what my opinions are regarding "outing" people; though, I am very interested in knowing what other people think or feel about this process.

Some things to think about—for instance:

*Is it ok to "out" someone if they are living a hypocritical life? [If they are secretly engaging in homosexual activities while publicly denouncing homosexuals.]

*Is it ok to "out" someone because everyone has the right to know who is gay for their own protection? [In the interest of health, such as HIV concerns.]

*Should people NEVER be "outed" because they have the right to privacy and live their lives as they choose, just as everyone else?

Thanks for your time and thoughtful answers

"Outing" someone is wrong. I agree that it's not right to publicly denounce homosexuality and engaging in it privately, but that's no one's business except this persons. As far as "outing" someone because everyone has the right to know who is gay for their own protection in the interest of health, that goes for hetrosexuals too. They can cause their partner to get an SDTs.
Is anyone "outing" hetrosexuals?" Of course not. Because that's considered "normal."
Everyone's sex life is private and should only be between them and their partners.

I find it odd that "outing" or "coming out" is even an issue.

I mean I couldn't care less what others do in their bedroom, on the kitchen table or the roof for that matter!

Why some people feel the need to advertise their sexuality is beyond me and then again why some choose to hate those simply for a different road traveled is also mind boggling.

I say everyone should shut up and pay attention to what they are doing right or wrong in their own lives! Its a nice dream but it won't happen anytime soon. Bummer!!

Happy Sunday !!

I don't think you should "out" someone for any of those reasons. It is their life. They can do whatever they want. But just because they have the right to not be "outed" and are living a hypocritical life, doesn't make it right.

My personal belief is mind your own business. If a persons sexual orientation has nothing to do with you, it is their own business as to whether it is public or not. Just because "it will come out anyway" is no excuse for you to be the one who hurts others. If the "hypocritical" life style has some effect on your life, then deal with that person one on one to resolve the conflict.

If they are gay, it will come out! What you do in the dark will come in the light! My advice is to leave them alone. It is wrong to try to hurt a person, because they have a life style that is not pleasing to God!
