Who fought: pretty much everybody (that's why it's a world war).
Who started: somebody in Europe whose initials are A.H.
Reasons: everybody else was.

WWII is a long story. Basically, after WWI there was a corridor in North Poland which divided Germany. Hitler took advantage of that to promote his nationalistic ideology, urging Germany to take what was German. Once in power, he invaded Poland, with previous treaties with England, for example. This is a short answer. You should look for the Corridor in the north, the ideology of Hitler (favored for the fear to Communism) which was well received by the German people. who fought? several countries: Germany invaded Poland and almost all Europe, Italy and Japan were allies fo Germany. The USA intervened after Pearl harbor. Look for good book and read. It is very interesting.

Axis powers: Germany, Japan, Italy (the main three) and also Siam (Thailand), Bulgaria, Croatia, Finland (for a joint attack of the USSR). Byelorussia and occupied France also aided the Germans. Facsist Spain was friendly to the Axis but never actually joined.
Allies: Britain, France (pre-invasion, and Free French forces and Resistance therafter), Poland (until it fell in 1939), Norway (until it fell ,and covertly thereafter), Denmark (ditto), the US, Caanda, Australia, New Zealand, Italty (after liberation in 1944, Italians joined the allies) and at least a few Latin American countries (although their contributions are often ignored or forgotten).
With rampant poor economies in the 20s and 30s, and the rise of mass communications, many European nations turned to either fascism or communism. Western powers favored and worked for fascism to prevail over communisim; they saw it as preferable to communism (even French surrender was presumed to be favorable to a drawn-out guerilla war against the Germans, which could destabilize the country further and lead to communism). Japan, meanwhile, had been emulating great European powers since it came out of seclusion in 1850, and as part of that emulation, decided that in order for it to be a great nation, it needed an empire, too. When western powers criticized Japanese expansion, Japan saw this as hypocracy.
As part of fascism and staunch nationalism. Germany and Italy began conquering other lands, starting more or less in the mid-30s. After some of this was tolerated, the invasion of Poland made Britain and France say enough's enough, and allied forces entered the war. The once-preferable "ally" of fascism against communism had gotten out-of-hand; western powers needed to ally with the communisits to fight it.
