it was basically fought to prevent Germany from becoming a world power.
Two old continental powers, Austria-Hungary an the Ottoman (Turkish) empires, aligned with newcomer Germany.
France and Britain, the dominant world powers, aligned with Russia, and old and crumbling empire that would soon fall apart (1917) in revolution. The US sort of took Russia's place in the alliance.
It technically started in 1914 with the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand ( a rep of the A-H Empire, which ruled much of the Balkans) by a Serbian nationalist (Serbs wanted to create a pan-slav nation - essentially the future Yugoslavia).
It would have happened anyway; France and Britain clashed with Germany every few years since the 00s as Germany flexed its imperial muscles.
It ended Nov. 11, 1918, and Germany was blamed for the entire thing. The war reparations it was forced to pay kept Germany in an economic depression through the 20s, and enabled Hitler's rise in the 30s.

The primary combatants were England and France fighting Germany and The Ottoman Empire. It began when the Archduke of Yugoslavia was assassinated in Sarajevo and the reasons are many I'm sure. The dates were from 1913 to 1918. Just do a google search on WW1 and you can find alot more about it.

Look this up yourself and do not expect others to do your work for you.
This is a bad trait to learn and if you keep it up you will go through your life expecting others to do things you need to do.
