Choose music that has meaning to you, music whose lyrics go well with the pictures. Also pay attention to how long the music you’re choosing is. If you’re only showing 30 pictures, you might not want to choose a 8 minute song.
I am sure that whatever you choose, the fact that you are putting these pictures together of the family will be special enough that the music will only be an afterthought.

"Yesterdays" by Guns N' Roses. I used it on a slideshow about my friends.
I also recommend "You're My Best Friend" by Queen", but it all depends on what the pics are of. But I'm sure that you're family will appreciate that fact that you made a slideshow in the first place.
