I have had to do that a few times myself. I would say start by renting a storage unit and move as much of your posessions into it as you can. You need to tiddy up and make the place look spartan and clean all the time. Create a system to keep order.
Make the rooms look like showplaces if you can.

Actually having just a few good pieces of furniture is best as it helps the person dream and to see that 'yes his king sized bed will fit' or whatever it is.
Having the wall neutral color is most important.

No ya don't....Infact, like the others said, having it empty makes it look bigger and leaves more room for the prospective new owner's imaginations to run wild with what they would like to do with the place.
The only thing i would be concerned about is having squatters seize the place whilst it's empty.

no, actually having a house empty usually helps it sale better, it looks bigger, and the buyer does not have to wait for you to move out
