There are really only two types of aquarium smells that I know of. First is the earthy smell of the nitrifying bacteria colonies that your aquarium needs. The second type is a salty, fishy smell if one of your fish has died. Remove the dead fish as quickly as possible to avoid a dangerous ammonia spike.
I'd say change 20% of the water every other week. And don't disturb more than half of the gravel during a water change.

the fish itself dont smell but the water will if you ignore it and do not clean it. Do not over feed the fish, the leftover food help make the water smell and fish waste too, do water changes once a week 15-20%.

Fish do not smell. It is the bacteria/algae in the water that adds to the smell. So you have to change the water (Carefully).
Don't try to clean the fish!
