Im in 8th grade right now and I want to be a cheerleader next year.
What do we have to do at tryouts? Does weight matter?
what do we have to know? Is there a specific way to dress if ur a cheerleader
and how often do we have practices and does your grade affect if ur a cheerleader or not?

Being a cheerleader in two simple steps:-

1. Have your brain removed and placed in a bucket (just in case later you realise that you need it after all)

2. Get someone to superglue your face into one of those fixed vacuous bimbo smiles

Then..... Hey Presto! you're a cheerleader!!!

[just love how the cheerleader giving advice below spells "school" as "skool"... just about says it all, really]

At tryouts they will expect you to perform a cheer, be enthusiastic and a very defined voice that carries. I haven't cheered since 1987 but... from my experience, it was all a popularity contest. I worked very hard and made varsity my first year out, not a small accomplishment. Weight seems to have always played a significant roll but in my opinion I think bigger girls are needed for strength and a valueable part of the team. How you choose to dress is up to you. The instyle fashions aren't going to make a difference when you are out on the field/court and/or sidelines as you will be in your designated uniform. I would recommend getting some current cheerleading videos (not like movies, but real instructional videos) that are set to the time that is appropriate for how squads compete in 2005-2006. This is going to be a real good resource for you getting started. Lastly your grades definitely affect whether you are allowed to remain on the team if you make the tryouts, I believe the school will mandate what your grades need to be at to avoid being on he team.
The only concern I have for you would be the weight thing that you mentioned. It may take some discipline on your part but if you have the extra weight on you (depending on how much) you may want to consider watching what you eat. And I don't mean go on a diet either. You are only in 7th grade so I don't think you should be dieting. What I think you need to do is make healthy choices. While you may find at first you don't enjoy eating things that are good for you, there are so many choices out there and if you keep trying different things you will discover some foods that you might really enjoy. If you have any questions or need some help in thinking of good healthy things to eat, let me know I would be happy to give you some suggestions.
Have faith in yourself, you can do this!!!!!!!!!!

I think you should find out who the cheerleading coach is and ask her what the requirements are. Or if you feel comfortable asking one of the cheerleaders when tryouts are and what you should do to prepare for them, that would work. Weight only matters if it hinders you from being able to do the cheerleading moves. A few extra pounds won't count as long as you can do the handsprings, jumps, etc. and have good cardiovascular health.

Keeping your grades up is important even when you are a cheerleader so you have to budget your time to get homework done outside of practices. Hundreds of thousands of kids (actually probably millions) have done extracurricular sports and activities and managed to keep their grades good, so you shouldn't have any problem if you plan your time.

cart-wheels, splits and a whole bunch of other things. yes 'cuz when a fat person does a split, all his weight shows (it depends on how fat or skinny a person is). u have to know how to dance and how to be flexible. yes, you have to wear ur cheerleader outfite to practice and to a game where u will be cheering at and allways dress with the newest fashion. NO EXCEPTIONS!! at least one every week (it depends when u have a game to cheer at). it depends on how serious u r 'bout it and 'bout ur studies. it didnt affect me when i became a cheerleader. that's 'cuz for me, my studies are as important as my cheerleading. a little tip: dont let the pep in ur skool bring u down. for ex, if u wanna become a cheerleader, try out for it. dont listen to the other pep. they will be jealous if u make it. DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM. trust me. im a cheerleader my self. at first my friends were jealous 'cuz i made it and they didnt. so after i convinced them to try out, they made it and now, we are all cheerleaders and we rule the skool. after all, cheerleading and popularity comes hand and hand (2gether, i mean)

I love how she says, "i want to be a cheerleader?" with a question mark. Yeah, you're cheerleader material. Enjoy the next four years, because it's all downhill after that for you.
