Not necessarily, but the carpet and drapes should not clash. If you can find a color chart that shows different colors and shades of that color, that would be very helpful to you.
Try the library. They may have books on decorating homes and they might have the information you need. There may be sites on the internet that do the same thing.

tongue and groove hardwood floors are much better, and the Drapes only need to compliment the windows...
