Many people say it means "V for victory," which it does, but it also has another meaning.

The reason why the Trojans use this gesture is based on something actually practiced by the ancient Trojans. After the Trojans would conquer a group of people, they would cut off the index and middle finger of the men they conquered. They did this because without those finger it is very difficult for the men to fight back; it's hard to use a sword, spear, or bow. But, they could still farm and do other tasks.

So, the Trojans would taunt the conquered people by holding up their two fingers as if to say, "Ha, ha, I'm the victor. I still have my fingers!"

Hence, the symbol means Victory, but it's a special taunt for the Trojans.

I believe the 2 finger tradition started in 1977 when I was a sophomore at USC. The university, which was established in 1880, made plans to celebrate its centennial in 1980 by launching a celebration called "Toward Century II". When an announcement was made at one of the football games about USC's pending second century as an academic institution some in the student section stood up and held up two fingers and started humming/singing along with the music as they do today. All the students joined in and waved two fingers for "Toward Century II". That's how I remember it. Though its origin may have been mostly forgotten, it's become a lasting tradition.

Fedup.. I saw the video about Obama at the thing with Harkin, the one where all the democratic candidates are saluting the flag while Obama has his hands folded in front of him. Fact is, this was during the National Anthem, not the Pledge. I am far from being a supporter of Obama, and, like you, I do feel that, as a candidate for President, he should show the utmost in respect and allegiance for the flag. I also realize that Obama didn't actually break any etiquette with his folded hands. As etiquette states, you can do that when the National Anthem is being played.
