DVDs were developed after CDs. They developed DVD writers to be compatible.

The laser spot used to burn a DVD is much, much smaller (more precise) than the ones for a CD. So a CD laser is like trying to write your name with spray paint. The DVD writers are designed to burn to CD standards or DVD, but the CD writers don't use fine enough optics to burn DVDs.

The DVD technology is more advanced with much more accuracy required to read/write them. In order for the DVD drives to be backwards compatable the onboard Firmware knows how to read CD's which are less demanding. CD writers on the other hand opperate to a lower degree of accuracy and don't have any knowledge of DVDs otherwise they would be DVD writers wouldn't they!!. WIth DVD writers in the £20-30 area why worry :)

No it isn't dvd is an advance on cd technology so it would have to be backward compatable.
CD is a technology by itself, and if it could read dvd then it wouldnt be a CD would it...it would be a DVD.

simple.

look at it like layers.

a cd is the the simplest layer, cheapest etc.

dvd is a complex layer and more expensive.

threfore a cd can only do/read cd's, but the more complex and expensive dvd can read the cheap cd. makes sense to me.
