your baby has probably dropped and the head is putting pressure on your cervix, this is what causes the cervix to thin and dilate.

If you feel like the baby's head is right there, you should go to the doctor and get checked. I never felt contractions with my 2 until right before they came (30 minutes) and only because they stuck me on Pitocin.

At 38 weeks I felt the pressure with my son and the doctor sent me straight to the hospital because she could feel his head and I was 100% dilated. He was born a couple hours later with only 3 pushes.

The baby has likely dropped and you could even be dialating. I know in my later weeks I felt like the baby was coming out all the time.

Stay off your feet as much as possible if you are uncomfortable.

Labour go to hospital sometimes your water doesnt always break all 4 my pregnancy and labors my water never broke on its own and it hurted real bad extremely pain becase the pressure of the baby's head hitting against the water bag. It causes stress on baby and thats not good go to hospital get it checked out, see your baby doctor asap if your hospital sends you away and your still in pain because sometimes hosptial people are stupid they think everyone's water breaks.... when reality it does not and if your one of those woman who are experiencing this stick up for your baby dont let them give you the run around and dont let them push you out the door especially if you are hooked up to the stress machine and it shows your having contractions. If you are having contractions they'll check your dialation now because your water didnt break on it own, it will be real painful dialating you can ask for upperduro when your 4 centermeters and the hospital will have to break your water baggs for you. Rapid labor is also extreme painful rush to hospital because baby is gonna come fast. My last labor went real bad i told them about my water not breaking they tried to make me wait after my due date even though i was having concractions and because they bully me into waiting my placenta became deattched and i had to have an emergency c-section. If you feel yourself that something is wrong don't let anyone tell you otherwise demand to be properly looked at and get the stress test machine hook up on you get ultrasound inside hospital if neccessary but don't let them push you out that door if your having those pains you described please for your baby's safety because something could be wrong not trying to upset you but really get it checkout.

Note: Also yes you could be in labour now not all woman go to 40 weeks some woman go before and some woman go after so if your having what you described then get a move on go to hospital now get it checked out.

Oh if for any reason you feel the baby coming out if your baby head crowns before you make it to the hospital just support the baby's head as it comes out DON'T PULL just support it and but you really should read up on how to self delivery just incase. Everyone who's having a baby should be given that information it should be manadorty becuase it does happen and you don't wanna be more worried, at least if you know what to expect in case of extreme emergency situation. Not all taxi or family members, husbands or boyfriends or mates know how to delivery a baby and not always is their a policeman or fireman around and sometimes you dont have time to call for help. It should be law Baby doctors should supply Labour delivery information so if you have that happen your perpared.

seroiusly if your feeling bad pains go to hospital tell them your having contractions get them to hook you up to the stress machine see if you having contractions. you'll see two seperate lines one monitors heart beats the other monitors contractions. If you see hills appearing usually on bottom sheet every so often you are having contractions 28 and up on the screen number anything over 50 is big contrations coming. so make sure you can see the machine to know for sure yourself if you are in labor. Also you can miss seeing your muccus plug so hopefully you are not waiting to see those signs that they normally tell you because not eveyone sees or experiences things like water breaking. Strong pains are usually enough reason to go to hospital get it checkedout for peace of mind.
