My partner and I are living through a tough time. We are trying to be supportive to one another but we are both worried and uncertain about financial and legal troubles. How can I help her through this?

At times like you describe, the feeling that you don't have control over important aspects of your life can be a major source of stress. Too many of us respond to it by trying to take control of something else, like our partner's life. So watch out for that. If it happens, apologise and try again.

Make a plan, as best you can, for your money. Even if it's just for the month, it will help you feel more secure and help you make better decisions on the little purchases that can really deplete our wallets. See if you can find a financial advisor -- many areas have some sort of provision for people on low-incomes to get free advice on money.

Talk about how you each handle stress. Be aware of when the other is acting out about the situation and don't take it personally. Find some sort of method (i.e. counting to 10) that lets you take a step back so that you can act with awareness rather than reacting in ways that make it harder.

From the way you've worded your question, it sounds like you have a pretty good handle on things. Stay aware, watch your own emotions and don't read too much into hers.

Hang in there. And best of luck with all of this.

What I know will help for sure is try not to give your opinion on the situation especially if it concerns her...unless she asks for it. This way she'll feel you're there to actually support her and provide for a listening ear...she'll relax more. The good ol nurse's trick when you have no control of the situation.

I would say keep communicating and talking about your feelings for each other, so that even when other things get you both down, you don't forget why you are together.
Good luck, and I hope things get easier.
