This past Wednesday (Nov. 15th), I went to a family planning clinic to get started on the pill. They did my pap smear and I told them I had been itchy down there for a couple days (and especially after I had sex that Monday, the 13th). They looked at a sample under a microscope and told me I had trich. They gave me metronidazole to take in one dose (it was 4 500mg pills, so a 2g doseage). I took it later that night, and so did my boyfriend, who I got it from. We haven't had sex at all, but it has been 4 days, and my symptoms aren't really going away yet. I'm still itchy down there, but not nearly as bad. Like it didn't bother me at all yesterday, until right before I went to bed. I don't know what the deal is. I don't know how long it takes for the medicine to fully work but I'm still pretty uncomfortable. What's going on?

The new "one dose" treatment does not work for me. Let your doctor know that it's not working and see if he will prescribe a different dosage. You can also buy OTC treatments for this that work every bit as well. I usually get the Monistat 3. It also helps to get a topical cream to go with it for itching "outside". However it's still important that you let your doctor know because it may be a different type of infection. Good luck!

It is recommended that Metronidazole be given a 500-mg vaginal insert once daily for ten (10) days. You should allow this 10 day period to pass, and if your symptoms have no abaited, talk to your doctor.

This acute stage may persist for a week or months, but it will often fluctuate in intensity; it may worsen following menstruation. Eventually the discharge and other symptoms may actually disappear completely, even though the patient still harbors the protozan Trichomoniasis.

Therefore, after you complete the medication; or your 10 day prescribed time has elapsed, you should return to your doctor for testing to confirm the infection is gone. Your boyfriend should continue to take this medicine for 10 day (or as prescribed) and return for testing, as well.

Metronidazole is an extreme effective therapeutic agent. I believe that once you finish this drug, you and your boyfriend will be clear - however, cases of Metronidazole resistance have been reported.

Hope this answers your question!
