In spite of ample evidence that employment interviews are not very useful in predicting future employee performance, employers continue to use them extensively. What do you feel the reasons for this? What suggestions would you make to an employer who insists that no person will be hired without a personal interview?

Granted, some people do not interview well. However, I think that many employers do like to check a person's social skills as well looking at their qualifications on their resume. Also, let's face it, people do lie/exaggerate on their resumes, and many times employers are also trying to get a sense if the person has the knowlege they say they have on the resume. And although this is not fact-based, I think that many employers do get a "gut" sense of whether someone will work out with their company or not. Obviously, this sense can be very wrong sometimes! Overall, I think that personal interviews can be very useful, if nothing more than to make sure the person is who they say they are!

All companies have their rules and regulations whether you like them or not and with so many people being out of work; this is will be one of the "weeding out" process.
Your first contact probably will be the employment /human relation dept and they only process the applicants and from there the person that is going to do the hiring or make the final decision is the one that will want to meet you , ask questions and maybe give you a test. I dont think i would make any suggestions about their policy which is most common in most jobs.

I fully believe in personal interviews, particularly for a small business where you'll work in close contact with every employee. What evidence supports your view that interviews aren't useful?

If you want a job, do not get all worked up about this. Just go along and rant and rave about the war in Iraq or something.
