these nothing wrong with essential collection a little behind the current issues, and you can have a quick catch up as there is usually 3 comics in 1. got to start from some where. also you can go on eBay from loads of bundles of good quality comics for next to nothing, better that buying in shops for £2 quid a comic, saved me a fortune in x-men comics

I recommend some of the reprints of earlier titles, but make sure you are aware of where in the timeline the story fall. Read a few with the Green Goblin, the Kingpin, Dr Octopuss, Kraven the Hunter, to get a feel for Spidey's beginnings, his relationships (friends, relatives, rivals, and business) After that I would get Marvel Secret Wars, (from the 1980s) as a starting point, then pick and choose what stories you like beyond that.

The best advice about you will ever get about reading comic books is just pick up the current issue. Essentail Collections is for the die-hard fans and collectors that have back issues worth tons of cash. You know the origin, the villians, supporting characters and etc. It doesn't matter if you're out of the loop of the current continuity. Most comic book titles are written to appeal both fans and new readers alike.

depends where you left off. a lot of guys read spider man in the 80's and came to our comic book store wanting to pick up where they left off, for them I reccomend the straceinski run which started in 2000 and has numbers on the sides of the trades.
If you havnt read any than ultimate spider man a good place certain for the frist few trades.essentials is really for older fans and in some respects younger readers for story lines. I must admit I love them but as a completist.
