This is a relatively new phenomenon within the last 3-6 months. Even universal browsers like Firefox are locked out from financial or certain educational websites. Is this incompetent web construction or is it because Macs are not as easy to probe for private information that web spies like to gather? I have even found Yahoo sites that forbid Mac access now. What can we do to allow more web diversity?

I won't blame those who make their web sites work only for IE.

Say if you have to spend $10,000 to get your app to reach 90% of the users, or $20,000 to get 99%. I am not surprised that many people would choose the former.

Firefox and Safari just have to work harder, not only on their products but also marketing.

Have you tried using Safari at those same sites? The main reason given by MS for discontinuing IE for Mac was that Safari could do anything IE could do. I've found that Firefox and Netscape (Netscape uses Mozilla, but I don't know what Firefox uses for a base engine.) don't work in many places anymore. (Usually if you get the site open with Safari and check the Source code, you'll find the site is using MS for its site construction.)

I only use Safari these days and have no problems opening ANY site.

The only problem I've seen with connection has been that the new Yahoo IM doesn't work right for Macs and doesn't allow connection to chat. (Yahoo replaced its old chat areas with new ones via IM) I miss some of the Mac computer groups I used to share info with!!

Heh, its not of incompetent structure or some conspircey :P

Alot of the websites are made to work only with Internet Explorer for Windows. Firefox, Opera, Safari and the rest are built on different structures, and cant be like IE because of Copyright Issue (Wouldnt wana get sued by microsoft would ya?) Currently, micrsoft is fighting to take back the web they lost, (Firefox holds around 10% internet browser, opera like 6% and the others around 3%) while before IE was the number one Browser, even on mac's :P.

It is the height of stupidity to try to market to only one restricted group.

But, that 'restriction-mentality' is fomented by a few webauthors, and it really does suck, but, at least we know who is gathering personal data, to use illegally against us!!!

I avoid any website that doesn't meet the standards of the W3C.

I run Macs and Linux machines, at home and the shop. No need for the "114,000 Microsoft Virus Definitions". And, no need for DRM! http://pclinuxos.com
