Many computer programs had used a two digit system for the year: 97, 98, 99, etc.

y2k, a symbol for year 2000 (k=1000, 2k=2000), was a concern for anyone with a computer program using that two digit year system. Year 00 might be considered by the computer program to be an invalid year, and there was concern that the computer program would fail.

Would an insurance policy be automatically cancelled because no payment was made in a valid year greater than 99? Would a store burglar alarm be automatically shut off? Would a reminder not be sent that a lawyer had to file certain papers with the court?

There were no end of potential problems people worried about. In reality, few of these problems actually occurred.

As the clock rolled over from December 31, 1999 to January 1, 2000 we held our collective breaths waiting for the world to come to an end thinking that computers that control our lives would crash because the programming originally didn't anticipate the new century. In fact, there was little disruption at all, thanks to the good preparation once the error was realized and adjustments were made. Thank goodness - a good lesson learned for the future, I'm sure.

The year 2000.There was a big panic, because the calendars, built into computers, didn't have the contingency of turning over to the next millenia incorporated into them. People thought there was going to be a signifant economic impact from networks being down.
