I made a little survey yesterday and found out that many people think that there is indeed no lack in the childrens music, the problem is actually on the kids and the parents itself. Any suggestions on how to make them listen to their own music, given the fact that these days kids tend to listen to the latest pop hits rather than kids music?

p.s. what I mean by 'kids' here is the ones between the age of 2 to 6 or seven I guess (pre-teenager). I just feel that many young kids nowadays rather listen to rap music with all the destructive lyrics (well, not all, of course) instead of listening to kids music with educational lyrics.

well, the only kid songs my kids (3, & 1) listen to is from the tv... the kids shows.... letting them listen to other types of music teahces them how to differenciate between sounds, low & high etc. and shows them there is more than one type of music. when kids are growing up its important to allow them variety, of everyhting, food, music, toys etc. also lettign them listen to other types of adult music (music suitable for children, not eminem, ludacris, etc.) teaches them how to use words as well, and it also can set their mood, im a heavy listener to country music and soft music, so when my kids listen to it they are in a calm mood, but if im listening to a fast paced song , something to dance too they are gonna be hyped, and want to dance like wild animals.so no i dont think kids should be exposed to only childrens music....

Uhh, I don't think their pre-teens yet. But I know what you mean. kids shouldn't be listening to these things at all! It's probably b/c of TV, radio, and their older influences. If they don't have many teenage influences, it's probably b/c of other kids at their school who do, and they bring on the rap, hip-hop and what-not to your kids minds. I mean when I was six or seven, I was still singing the Barney song.
I'm not saying you should throw away the TV and radio or make them stay away from other kids at their school. But you could spend more time with them, doing kids stuff. Sure they may say stuff like, "That's for babies!" But do things like play board games, watch funny kids movies such as the new Santa Clause 3, listen to fun Disney songs together (not including Cheetah Girls and all those pop songs they show on TV today), stuff like that. It might help let them be more into their childish side rather than their "trendy" side.

The best way to get younger kids to do much of anything is make it into a game or just make it entertaining. Make it fun for them to listen to their own music. Dancing to there music would be way better than having them dance to older kids music. If parents made it fun, kids would do it.

Kids listen to what they are exposed to. If parents have kids music playing in the house when the children are present, it allows the children to get use to it. That needs to be done from day one, not wait until they are 2 or older.

Parents who expose their children to classical music from pre-birth on have children who appreciate classical music. These children may still go with the pop music, but the love of classical music will remain.

For older children, forcing them to listen will not work. Play the music you want softly in the background so it is hardly noticeable. It will grow on them.

Music appreciation classes designed for little ones will help. You play fun children's songs for them and get them to sing or hum along. Show them how to sing, or if too small, to hum.

Parent should buy them speciallized kids music. Sing a longs and things like that. Kids always hear mainstream pop in movies and a lot of the time it does not seem very appropriate. I also think kids the ages you are talking about should be listening ti the kid friendly radio disney. Parents should also make sure that they are playing music for their kids and not for themselves during car rides. For the longest time my niece's favorite song was a mainstream pop song because it was what she heard all the time but now she enjoys her Backyardigans cd,

Children will follow the example of people they look up to. This includes imitating their preferences.

The idea that children can be sheltered from the real world and kept in some "child friendly zone" is, for the most part, not reality.

Kids will pick up on your values (if you are true to them and they're consistent) and know truth and honesty when they see it.

for me, a good music for kids must be written in simple and short lyric and rhytm, so the kids can remember it fastly like the old mcdonald and mery has a little lamb. and it must give them fun too, some kind of dance musics that make the kids move their bodies.
when the music play, parents should join their kids to dance following the music rhytm, in order to encourage the kids to dance. it'll be good for parents children relation. kids in such age love energic activity eventough the older ones may embarassed to move their bodies with the parents.
maybe in that way they'll like the music.
you can call me conservative to tell you such things, but i agree with you that children should listen to musics suit for their age.

Children that young tend to listen to whatever you are playing. My daughter did. She still loves 80's music because of it. (She's 11)
She has gotten into rap, r&b, country, classic rock, punk, etc, etc. She's like me. Her music tastes vary wildly.

My nephew is 7. He loves the harder rock. Heavy metal I guess it would be. It's what he listens to with his dad.

Bottom line, listen to it with your young kids. Play it and enjoy it with them. If it has a good beat, they will like it. You might too.

Keep them away from all that rap music. And give them an mp3 player (with no radio) filled with the educational songs you want them to listen to.

i don't really know, but since my sister was a baby i bought (with my moms money lol...hey i was six) her a lullaby CD, and i would put it on during the day when she needed to calm down, and when she would go to sleep. then when she grew up a little i bought (again with my moms money lmao...again i was like 7 or 8 and with no allowance) her a CD with kids rhymes, songs and whatnot (i like that word he he) and we used to listen to it and sing and stuff, even tho i looked very silly being 12 and all.
But know that she is 7(8 on December) she just act like a diva, and now instead of being the "cool sister" like i was before, I'm just another "sister" anyway life is sad :(
