I know it's for checking to see if you can switch your number over, but can that also be used to pick a number you want?

No. This page only tells you if a number you already use with a different provider is eligible to be transferred to T-Mobile.

It can depend on what rep you get. Call T-mobile at 1-800-937-8997 and ask them if they will let you chose your number. What happened with me, is they read me off a number, and I just said that I didn't want it until they found a good number. I know people that have been allowed to pick their own number though.

What i do is, i request a certain prefix, if i knwo it is a tmobile prefix. Or I just ask them what numbers are available and theyll tell me a number and i say No dont like it, and i make them keep reading off numbers until i get one that i like.

Also, sometimes they insist on making you pick a number with a certain prefix and i KNOW that they have more prefixes than that available, i lie and tell them that its long distance to call that prefix from my landline, then wow, all of a sudden they have 5more prefixes avail with numbers!

T Mobile has been bought out by At&t as of March 20, 2100 pending FCC approval. Since then they have many problems like this that can not be explained. It is most likely their faulty network.

generally no. tmobile like other carriers are only alotted so many numbers in a given market. you can call customer service and request a number change. if the rep. is descent, they can check there data base of what numbers are available.
