I wouldnt do that. Try to see if there are some single, battery powered lights you can use to illuminate the tree.....I wouldt trust christmas lights on a metal tree lol.

As long as there is NO contact between the tree and a bare wire with power in it you are absolutely safe. Even if the wires are close by they are not in direct contact because of the plastic insulation. However note that lights are produsing heat too so if a light is touching the tree i bet that region is as hot as the lamp it self (2-3 inch - 8 cm radius)

Start at the top of the tree and wrap the string of lights around the tree, spacing as wide as you like (usually 6"-12" rows) till you get to the bottom, You may need more than 1 string to reach the bottom. Now plug them in and look at your job. You may want to adjust the string a bit here or there. Next put on the decorations, if desired. No tinsel icicles if you have pets.

You should be ok if there are no bare spots in the wires of the lights. Just so you know I own one that was handed down from my grand parents and I still use it with no problems. It is real metal.

Yes you can but their is always a risk of shocking your self so be careful the wire is not striped anywhere and you should be fine.

yes, unless they are massive 100W bulbs and a flashing santa sledge. God, christmas is upon us, is that the first christmas question of the year?
