A firm manufactures refrigerators at three plant locations A, B and C. For each location, the firm maintains a record of the refrigerators made at that plat, which require repair before expiration of warranty. Following is the summary of the information about repairs:

•Plant A produces 30% of all refrigerators and has a repair rate before warranty expirations, of 5%.

•Plant B produces 45% of all refrigerators and has a repair rate before warranty expiration, of 3%

•Plant C produces 25% of all refrigerators and has a repair rate before warranty expiration, of 7%.

If a refrigerator requires repair before warranty expiration what is the probability that it was manufactured at Plant B?

OK to work out that probability you need to do the probability of the refrigerator being made at Plant B AND it expiring before the warranty ends.
In probability AND means x so to work it out you do:
the probability of the refrigerator being made at Plant B x the probability of it expiring before the warranty ends.
This equals
45/100 (45%) x 3/100 (3%)
Which makes
0.0135 (Out of 1 - definite)
Or, in percentage (x 100) 1.35%

Think about this question using actual production numbers. If the firm manufactures 10 000 fridges in a year the numbers for each plant are:
A = 3000
B = 4500
C = 2500

And the number of fridges requiring warranty repair are the number of fridges multiplied by the percent requiring repair (shown below as a decimal).
A = 3000 X 0.05 = 150
B = 4500 X 0.03 = 135
C = 2500 X 0.07 = 175

The total number of fridges needing warranty repair is
150 + 135 + 175 = 460

The fraction from plant B is 135/460 = approx 29%
