you might be better buying one in south africa, but as the first answer said geta tri band - ask the shop if it will work also try looking on some of the manufacturers websites so you actually get the right info eg the nokia or motorla web sites and go for a phone that is available both places also the phone might work but your sim card might not so you also need to check which network is compatible - eg a nokia with vodaphone might work but the similar model for orange might not

A dual band handset is sufficient. You would need a tri band handset if you were also going to the United States. However, most cellular handsets nowadays are tri or even quad band.
Before you leave the UK have the mobile phone network unlocked. You can have it done in SA but it would be cheaper and advisable to do it before you leave the UK. Although most cellular providers and service centres can network unlock handsets they cannot unlock them all as there is always a different release schedule for each handset - models released overseas don't necassarily see release in South Africa and vice versa.
If it's a handset that's been released in the UK and SA then you won't have a problem.

Buy a phone which is open to all networks. To check it, insert a sim card from one network eg Orange, and then try another sim card eg T-Mobile. If your mobile was able to pick up networks on those 2 different occasions, then it will definately work in South Africa, trust me.

All the cellphones I have bought in UK have worked in SA.
My only tip is; get the phone unlocked before you come to SA, so that you can take out your UK Sim card and put in a SA one.
Don't make the mistake I made the first time. Someone told me that if you use Vodafone in UK it will automatically switch over to SA's Vodacom. It did use the Vodacom signal but it still charged me in pounds and charged me at double UK rates eg 30p to text someone in back in UK and 50p to text someone in SA.
So get your phone unlocked and then use a SA Sim card when you get to SA.

Yes it will work in SA. I have a Motorola v220 that works perfectly. You just need to make sure you are not locked into a UK network or alternatively have international roaming which also unlocks the phone.
