We moved into a new home last winter. We have been using a leaf blower and also suctioning them up. We still have masses of leaves even after hours of work every weekend. Any recommendations on alternatives?

Leave blowers are misnamed cuz they suck! All they are really good for is blowing them out of hard to reach areas so you can rake them up. They do nothing to get the leaves up.

Hand held leave vacums are a little better as they allow more volume of leaves to go into a bag by shredding them up, but they still save nothing on the work load cuz you still have to rake & it takes more time to shred a pile then just pick them up.

Enter the LAWN SWEEPER.... If you have a big yard and/or a riding lawnmower you can buy a lawn sweeper attachment for it. What use to take me days (with a 1 acre yard) can no be done it a little over an hour. It will do all the work for you. It also gets grass clipings, pine needles/cones & all the other things that are not rake friendly. If you have a smaller yard or no riding mower, they also come in push models (which still beats the rake) as it gets them most times with a single pass & not much bending. You can find both kinds at places like Sears with the tractor attachment kind under $300 & the push model under $100. Time to kiss the leaves & rake goodbye ;)

If you dump them into a trash can and whiz them around with a weedeater you get a good mulch that doesn't leave with the first wind and takes up a fraction of the space. I wait until half the leaves have fallen (ish) and do a big rake and put them over my garden and then do the same thing after the leaves are all down. Life is too short to use it to fight nature.

It all depends on where you live and what your allowed to do with them. I'm out in the country and for me that means I can do anything I want with them. I save some for the mulch pile and the rest, I burn. You can reduce the volume they can create by shredding them down almost to a powder. Some municipalities will have special days for picking up organic material and they usually place it in their compost pile. Hope this helps.

If you have a lawnmower that is a mulcher use that instead of picking up all those leaves.

make lil fire starter rolls with them by rolling some up in newspapers (if you have a fireplace, if not then nevermind)
