Isn't it incredible that things are that way.

But you know that line of thinking only remains alive and well because people continue to think like that. Men and women can be guilty of this kind of thinking.

There are many reasons why a woman's chastity is considered somehow sacred but a ,man's is not. Some of it is religious and some of it is social and some of it is simply because women in many cultures are thought of as possessions of men.

A girl starts out belonging to her father, evidence of this is the tradional idea of the father 'giving away' the bride at a wedding.

When she marries she is then a possession of her husband evidenced by her adopting her husbands name.

Throughout history at various stages reasons have been adopted to keep and or restore old values.

Because a baby comes out of the woman's body her body was considered somehow 'magical' and as magic and religion are closely tied together in most cultures the religious leaders would shroud womens body in all kinds of mystery.

In some periods of history there have been stages when venereal diseases were rife and at one time to have sexual intercourse with a virgin was considered a 'cure' for gonnorhea. We know today that isn't true.

To control the sexual behaviour of women it is necessary for society to create ideas and images about what is right and wrong and then to instill those ideas through innuendo, rumour, and plain old gossip.

A lot of these attitudes are grounded deeply in the 'heir apparent' system. A man wanted to be certain that the 'son' who was going to inherit his fortune was actually his son. So the man would seek to marry a chaste a woman who was unlikely to produce a son to another man.

I guess it is the thinking that although we always know for sure who our mother is we don't always know who our father is, though this is changing with DNA tests etc.

But I have a feeling that the whole idea of men being legends and women being sluts has a little more to do with the idea that men do not bear children, therefor there is no long term evidence of their promiscuity, women who do and can bear children have evidence for all to see that they have been promiscuous. Though this has changed somewhat with the introduction of contraception and the acceptance of abortion in society.

In my own experience I had two children before marrying and both children were to different fathers. My own brothers called me a **** and so did my mother and yet both of my brothers had had sex with far more partners than I had even imagined having sex with. My sisters who also had been promiscuous but had not fallen pregnant prior to marriage were simply considered to be a little adventurous. It was I who fell pregnant and kept my babies that was the ****.

It is interesting that men love women to be slutty when the men are seeking sex but when a woman has no potential to be a sexual partner she is just a **** for having sex with others.

My present partner says he has never understood why it is that his fellow man loves a **** but marries a prude. I have to agree with him, it makes no sense. Especially when years down the track those same men bemoan the fact that there is no sex in their relationship. Perhaps they should have married one of the sluts that they had simply used for sexual pleasure.

I think its has something to do with male dominance. Male lions, have many females and breed with all of them. They compete with other males to get more females. Society has always run on a male dominance idealism, and on a subconscious level probably tried to do the same thing the lions did. The ones who made the laws, and the ones who founded countries were men. It hurt their egos when a woman slipped away to another man so to speak. but, Times have changed, and ever since the women's rights movement in the sixties women have started catching VERY quickly. Saying a man is a stud, or a Woman is a whore for being promiscuous is sexual harassment. Men and women are SUPPOSED to be equal on all levels now. so either they are BOTH studs, or they are BOTH whores.

values
society see promiscious men as powerful and virile, it has been seen this way for years, centuries
where as a women has always been held up to the maddona standard, in that we seek vestal virgins to marry ideally ( not found much anymore ), so those women who do not fall under that catagory are considered less than and not suitable for any long term relation due their compormised sexual status
some women go out and become whore in effect to compete with men, to be as the boys , as to speak, and in doing so have lower the bar and standards for all women,
there are good women do value
but when the question is asked by women
the inference is the the asker herslef is also promiscuious and does not want ot be judged unfairly, but that cannot be done, the world is not fair, and so we have the double standard, men are great lovers, women are whores

One of my teachers was conducting a study a few years back. In it, she asked about the number of sexual partners. On a whole, men has more sexual partners than women. It was suspected that the men were embellishing their number of partners and women were diminishing them.

So, the question which resulted from all this is if men are sleeping with a ton of people and women aren't sleeping with that many people, then who are the men sleeping with?

As someone else said, it is a result of male dominance and masculinity. Masculinity is all about power, and what better way to show off how powerful you are than using women's bodies as proof. The more women a man sleeps with, the more of stud he is seen as because he is able to show off his power as a man through his sexual prowess (which may or may not last that long...).

It's just another one of those stupid double standards which makes women look bad and feel bad about themselves and make men look good and feel good about themselves and all for having normal sexual desires.

Because men have written the history.
Double standards galore.

Why was the Blitz horrible but the firebombing of Dresdan good?
Because the victor wrote the history.
it is all about who writes the history.

Didn't the men have to sleep with the women to become legends? It's a double standard in our society. Men are expected to be animals (hunters) and women are expected to be passive and nurturing.
