Do I have to physically open it up to get the number or is there a way I can get it from the system?

I need to buy a new one, and the store needs some kind of part number to see if they have it in stock.

The part number is on the top of the battery, so yeah... open 'er up and take a look. You might need to just take the battery out and show it to them, but that'll clear your CMOS settings for the BIOS. If that isn't a problem for you, go for it.

Most computers use the 2032 battery that is on the shelf at Wally World, 2 for $3.

Look it up at the maker's web site. Check out the board maker, and board number in the lower left corner of the screen upon boot up, using the pause key so you can write it down...

Then type it into a google.com search.
