Why do you assume the GOP is bitter?
They are disappointed, but not bitter.
They did a lot of this to themselves. When you get power for so long and stop doing what you are mandated to do, you will lose it.
System can and does work!
It does force the GOP to start reassessing it's party's goals and ambitions for the country and get back to the Conservative roots.
By the way, I do not think the racial overtones are appropriate!

You left out not getting away with arms for hostages trades to finance right-wing military groups (Iran-contra).

They just got through controlling the Presidency, the Senate, the House, and the Supreme Court. Yet, nothing but death and financial mayhem ensued. I'd be bitter, too.
