I assume you mean as part of an online purchase? This also applies to credit card/bank account, Social Security, phone numbers, etc.!!!
Only to a known reputable company and only through a secure (https) connection. DO NOT EVER EVER EVER give it out in a chat room or to someone you haven't checked out first. Via eMail is usually secure, but you might send 2 emails, each with part.
Eveb if using a secure site, have your cookies set to only send to original site address. Some scams will have you sending info to what appears to be a legal site, but actually it is going to a different site. If in doubt, I look for and call their business phone line to verify that they are who they say they are.
The important thing is KNOW who you are sending it to!!!
BTW: some of the con games out there (you won the UK Lottery, someone in Africa has money they want you to help transfer, etc. Ask for private info that they will sell as well as use in their attempts to steal your money.)
If I have your name and address, there are places on the internet where I can find out everything about you. Can you say IDENTITY THEFT!!

Not a good idea to give out info on any site. If you are ordering something and know it safe site never put any information on until note the "lock" on the bottom tool bar and in "http" url that there is an "s" such as "https". This would be sign of a safe site.

It's about as safe as running through a trailer park naked, carrying fistfuls of cash, with bags of Ecstasy taped to your nuts, screaming, DALE EARNHARDT WAS A SISSY!
