What are the factors that affect computer's video capture capability?

I have a TV tuner that also functions as a PVR. I can watch non HD programs on my PC without any problem (I haven't tried HD yet). And my computer perfectly handles all HD resolution files that I get from other sources. But when it comes to recording TV shows using the tuner's capture capability, even 720x480 videos come out choppy. Sometimes, it says that "the system is dangerously low on resources. Close all other programs and try again". Why? Does that mean I need more RAM, a better video card, or both?

BTW, I have Pentium 4 3.0GHz processor, and 1GB RAM. And some (probably cheap) onboard graphics card that is directly attached to the motherboard (not in a PCI express slot).

Any advice is greatly appreciated. :D

dallenmar... Thank you SOO much! :D :D you've always been very helpful. Well, my tuner allows me to set the resolution to 720x480 for analog (and even higher for HDTV). So, I assume it's NOT because of tuner's limitations... Am I wrong?

Rule 1: More RAM is always better and speeds things up.
Rule 2 when dealing with video: See rule 1, but say VRAM (Video RAM) If your video card has VRAM slots, Max it out. If not, go for a better video card with lots of VRAM.

Note that it may also be a limitation in the tuner card. How does it handle video processing? The television signal needs to be converted in the card to something the computer can use. This conversion time added to the capture time may be overtaxing the tuner. Does your tuner handle all video coming through it or is it routed to the comp's normal video card?

you want a rapid video card that might assist you output the video you're taking pictures, besides the undeniable fact that if the ingredient slows for the time of the seize it relatively is in all probability pertaining to to processor velocity quite than Video velocity, if it slows down while enjoying it then get the vid card.
