It's already started...but it's occurring in different parts of the world. Cause; the supposedly 'mature' states (yes...states) of the Western world.

The 3rd war has already begun. If you thought the first 2 were bad, then wait and see how bad the war on terror gets. This war will involve all nations cultures and religions eventually. More people will die over a longer period of time than in any single war previously fought. And the blame will go down purely to the extremist followers of faiths, of whatever religion, who want to see bloodshed at any cost to their opposing faiths and neighbouring countries. Leaders like bush and blair will for the next thousand years do what they think will end the terror, not realising they have been trapped into causing more. It wont be their fault, they will have to fight fire with fire, future leaders will need armies of soldiers to spread across the world as each battlefield becomes more infected with terrorism.
And dont lay the blame solely at the door of muslims or any one faith. We will all be part of it eventually, without even knowing.

All of you who say the USA are dead wrong. Our motives come after we're stricken (Ex. Pearl Harbor, Twin Towers, etc). I'd say North Korea will start it which is why we should pre-emptively strike them to avoide the devastation Kim Jong Il and his country could bring to our nation like others have in the past.
Who will be involved in it is an interesting question. No doubt will we be sided with Israel, Japan, South Korea, and India. But the "axis of evil" would consist of NK, Iran, Pakistan, and a good portion of the rest of the middle east.
China could go either way on this war and Russia seems to be backing off on world affairs on the whole.

Well, if you count the Cold War as WW3, then it's already over. If you don't, then you can technically consider 9/11 as the beginning of World War 3, assuming it'll lead to it. Now WW4? That's something else.

Assuming war is between countries, we rule out attacks from / against terrotists (since they are not really countries anymore) as not qualifying to be called war.
If at all there is going to be any war, it has to be started by US.
Iraq experience must have taught the world that invading other countries is not going to work, no matter what the reason is. Whereas US, though badly hurt in Iraq, still keeps all its options, including military action, open against Iran and North Korea; and quite possibly any other countries that may appear to threaten US interests. Recently, Britain's Blair also appears to have admitted blunder in invading Iraq. US (or Bush) is the only country still justifying Iraq invasion.
So, looks like US is the only country even willing to think of invasions and military actions. Also, it is the only country even capable of doing anything like this, with its unmatched military technology.
Who will be involved ? US will manage to gather its usual round of Allies. Opponents will be any country/countries that threaten US in nuke or space or even economic arenas.

Iran will start it.
March 2007.
They will attack Israel first.
The missile attack will be launched from Syrian land 1. to reduce warning time and 2. to deflect attention from Iran.
Syria is almost broke and Iran will pay lots to be allowed to do this.
They will then target areas in Iraq that are not under the control of the terrorists that they suppport.
Saudi will be next if they get involved - but they will be warned off and told not to allow US forces to launch from there. As will Turkey, effectively taking out a huge part of NATO's ability to respond.

I do not believe there will be a World War III because countries want to avoid it. What there will be are many small wars between countries like the United States and terrorist groups like Al-Quaida.

Well since everyone in the world seems to be declaring a "war" against terrorism, does that count?
If you're talking about WW III like WW I and WW II, and who'll start it.
Honestly
America.
Nice place, nice people, but you've been looking for trouble.
Everyone'll be involved, thus the title "World War"

Don't be surprised if it is US and Israel? What's the most likely way for the billions and billions of over-printed and utterly over-valued US dollars to be restored to its correct value, and greater Israel to be attained?! How else are the huge, private, military mega corporations going to make profits?! What has been the usual capitalist solution to the huge depressions that are inherent in its system? How much more will an awakening people of the world allow the oppressive and poverty-inducing agenda of the likes of World Bank and IMF to be imposed on them through puppet regimes?! What do you expect when diabolical seeds of Greed, Lies and Hypocrisy are being sown?
