As a former resident of a house that had six (yes, 6) cats and one dog, I would also recommend the Dyson. We had the one specifically for pet hair, colored purple instead of yellow. I am not discounting the $1,500 one some others mention, I have not used it personally but if weight and price is a consideration, go with the Dyson. For my own little "consumer test" I vacuumed the whole house with the rather pricey Electolux we were replacing and then repeated with the Dyson. I filled the Dyson's canister just in the living room with what the Electolux had not picked up.
Do be careful, though, we had Berber carpeting and found a loose spot, er rather the Dyson did and zipped up one row of stitching about two inches long- carpeting defect, though.

Kirby is best but 20lbs heavy and @$1500 expensive and the accesories are stored in a unit away from the machine.
I'd say that the 'animal'(you mentioned pet) Dyson is second best. it's light, it just like the commercial says it is. And it's very easy to rearrange for your uses and all the gadjets are stored on the unit. @$500 unit.
I had a Dyson until everyone was impressed with the Kirby, but I still miss the Dyson... especially when i have to lug it up/down stairs. Don't buy trash (no pun). won't work well enough and will have to replace the trash with something new soon enough again anyway, which ultimately ends up as a waste of money.

I have a Hoover Rewind that I bought last year. It's bagless, comes with a pet hair attachment thats like a powered brush head. All tools are on board, the cord winds with a tap of my foot and it's less than 100.00 dollars american. I should add that I have three large dogs, two longhaired cats and two shorthaird. I also clean for a living so have used dozens of other vaccums. I prefer this over ones that cost 10x more.

I have 3 cats and am quite happy with my Bissel upright bagless machine. Others have said they like Dyson vacuums.
Good luck!

In the past 32 years, I'm on my second upright Hoover vacuum, and have been very pleased at the brand's performance and how long they have lasted!

There are all kinds of good vacs out there. Go to www.consumersearch.com. They ask you what features you want and your price range. They'll give you reviews on all types of vacs.
