Technically, you can only use an iPod with iTunes, but there are programs out there that allow you to use a regular MP3 player with the program. I can't remember the name of the program though and I've never used it, so I can't vouch for its effectiveness. You might try searching a site like Cnet or PC World to find it. There are other good media managers though. I like Songbird (which is highly customizable and looks a lot like iTunes) and Media Monkey. As for a good player, I think that Creative Zen, Sansa, and Samsung make some great products that won't cost a lot (generally around $50-$70). If you're looking for something really cheap, GPX has some for $25-$40. They work well and last, but they aren't iPod quality by any means.

the m4p files from itunes music store are only compatable with ipods unless you use a little trickery to decode the protection.
this is illegal but there is software out there.
i do it to all the songs from itunes just because it annoys me that they have this DRM protection that just bothers customers
