Banner ads pay you either by cost per thousand impression (CPM) or cost per click (CPC).

With CPM, you earn per 1000 banner ad impressions or number of times banner was viewed. Say the advertiser is paying $1 per CPM -- that means you get paid $1 every 1,000 impressions. If you are able to serve 100,000 impressions, your earnings is 100,000/1,000 x $1 = $100.

With CPC, the advertiser sets the amount you earn every time the ad is clicked (no matter how many times you give the ad impressions). So if the amount per click is $0.10 and the ad was clicked 100 times, then you earn $10

You can join an advertising network. Advertising networks are organizations that aggregate Web sites that offer advertising space, and sell banner ads (and other advertising options) across them. Traffic requirement is often a minimum of 5,000 monthly impressions, although many do not accept sites hosted by free page services.

Fastclick (ValueClick). http://www.fastclick.com
Advertising.com. http://www.advertising.com

Participate in contextual advertising networks. Contextual advertising are text ads delivered based on the content of the web page using an automated system.

Google Adsense https://www.google.com/adsense/
Yahoo! Publishing Network (currently in beta and available to US publishers only) http://publisher.yahoo.com/
Intellixt http://vibrantmedia.com/site/web_01a5.htm
Quigo Adsonar http://www.quigo.com/adsonarexchange.htm

Commission Junction Evolution http://www.cj.com
Kanoodle Brightads http://www.kanoodle.com/about/brightads.html
Clicksor http://www.clicksor.com/affiliate_programs.php
Contextweb http://www.contextweb.com/
Bidclix http://www.bidclix.com/
Bidvertiser http://www.bidvertiser.com/

Note that both banner and contextual ad networks require a sharing percentage with the network. If you earn $100 from a campaign and the sharing is 60-40 with 40 per cent going to you, then it means your net is only $40. Some banner ad networks pay by net 30 days while others such as BurstMedia pays by net 90 days so it'll take 3 months before you see the earnings.

You can also do Affiliate Programs - you sell other people's products that your audience may be interested in; and you get a certain commission after the desired action was done (whether a sale, a lead, subscription to email newsletter, or however this is defined). You can serve a banner 1 million times but fif you only sold 1 item and the buyer pays only $30 for commission, then you only earn $30.

As a non profit however, your chances for earning from banner ads is not great. It will be tougher for you to get traffic, and the visitors you will attract are not the type who are likely to respond to ads. Contextual advertising and affiliate programs may not work well for you, though you may fare better with affiliate programs because you can say to your visitors to support the site by buying or clicking on the ads. Banner and contextual advertising networks prohibit publishers from asking visitors to click on the ads as that is construed as cheating the advertisers as people are responding to the ads not because they are interested in what the advertisers are offering but in supporting you.

If you're an affiliate, there is a fixed rate I guess. Like Cost per Click or Cost per Impression in Adwords. You should review what your contract is. I would rather have you paying them cost per impression.

BTW, check out this FREE video I just subscribed to recently about targeted FB ads. It's a complete tutorial of how you can do targeted FB ads and not lose money or waste valuable leads.

Third party affiliate networks such as Commission Junction, LinkShare, Shareasale and ClickBank are essential resources for the serious online affiliate marketer. They provide the affiliate marketer with products to sell, website content, hourly stats, complete tracking and collecting services. More importantly they send out your monthly commission checks.

I saw some great alternatives here, but I noticed no one mentioned Qadara -- an ad platform I use for my own blog to help me make money. Qadabra is a platform where you can set up your account on your own and your signed up within seconds. It makes money through performance-based advertising. Basically the more traffic you send, the more money you can make. But for me, it was a lot more self-serve and a lot easier than some of the others I made -- and I actually got revenue in return!
