Teller's trademark silence originated during his youth, when he earned a living performing magic at college fraternity parties. He found that if he maintained silence throughout his act, spectators both stopped heckling him and focused more on his performance.

No, he cannot talk. He used to work in the meatpacking district in New York City as a teenager, and lost his tongue in an unfortunate slicing machine accident. He can only make groans and grunts and refuses to learn sign language. Penn actually spoke Teller's proposal to his now wife, since Teller was unable to do it himself. To this day, Penn does all the talking for the two of them.

I couldn't agree with Michael I more! He hit it right on the head.
At their show at the Rio in Vegas, as the show is ending, the duo runs out into the lobby. They will do autographs and photos and Teller will talk to fans and answer questions.
I hope this helps!
