Elephants-trunk up?

A friend just got a ceramic elephant with it's trunk up as a gift from someone who visited India. What is the meaning of this? I have heard that they are meant to be good luck, but they are supposed to be set up in a specific way, any advice is appreciated.

Trunk up brings good luck, but they have to be pointed towards a door

Should be facing east for good luck
