When I was a kid my family played what we called The Animal Game. The person who was first to identify a wild animal we saw would identify the animal, and get points based on what kind of animal it was, provided someone else also saw it and agreed to what it was. Different animals had different point values that we had previously agreed on, based on the size and rarity of the animal. You can make up your own point scale as you go also, and seeing something no one in the car had seen before was part of the fun because then everybody had to agree on how many points it should be worth, knowing that next time it would be worth the same points. This kept us from discounting the first sighting of something really cool, because we knew each of us could get big points next time we saw a cool animal. Road kill didn't count, only live animals. It was lots of fun, and kept everyone awake, including the driver. Just remember thatwhen you point at the animal you see so it can be seen and enjoyed by others, don't poke the driver in the head...!

Sure we did them all the time when we were kids now my kids love them.
Try the ABC game. "I'm going on a trip and I'm going to take an (A word) with me. the 2nd person must repeat exactly the phrase and add a "B" word and so on through the alphabet.
ex. 1st person I'm going on a trip and I'm taking an apple."
2bd person, "I'm going on a trip and I'm taking an apple and a banana". And so on.
Also you can play the license plate game wher you see how many plates you can count from each different state.
Or cound different colored card. One person says I guess the most of one colored car we see will be white, and the oh=ther person chooses red. They count how many and in one half hour the most color wins.
And by all means, sing-a-longs.
Have a nice trip.

A game we used to love to play was where you would see how many different states you could find looking at the license plates.
