The Xbox360 is a VERY good gaming system that you will enjoy much. I'll assume you've done some research on it.
Also the Xbox360 CAN come with a hard drive and wireless controller for an additional $100 bucks. And you can also buy them seperatly also, as you've stated.
Also there is the Nintendo Wii, which it's only avantage is it's odd controller scheme. The controller acts out motions through a gyrosopic controller, such as if you were sword fighting, you would swing the controller around like a sword, thus representing the moves on screen. Pretty neat actually.
Also the Sony PS3 seems to be the ultimate mother of gaming systems right now, but it's got a huge price tag and are very hard to get ahold of right now. So talking about 499.99 to 599.99 depending on which system you like, or try eBay for $2,999.99!!
To answer your question, you could get a very nice used one perhaps at any local gaming shop. I've seen many advertisements for them recently.

Well, the controller is wireless with the deluxe model, but it comes with a cord that plugs into the USB port on the front so you can use it when the cheap non-rechargeable battery gives out, which it does in a couple of days. So you have to buy a rechargeable battery, which I did, and when it gives out, you plug the cord into the controller and into the USB port and you continue playing and it recharges the battery.
You cannot get just any memory card, you have to get Microsoft's card, nothing else fits, and it is only 64 MB.
PS3 will cost 100 dollars more than the Xbox 360. People have issues with the PS3 controller, no rumble being among them. There are trade-offs, as with so many things. But the Xbox 360 is good, it's cheaper, and it's now, not later. You are better off forgetting the basic version and going for the one with the hard drive and the wireless, as the cost is less if you don't have to add the hard drive and then the wireless controller.

Don't get the core system, the $100 difference is less than what it will cost you to eventually upgrade it. The wireless controllers are important, once you go wireless you will never be able to stand a corded controller again. As for the memory, it will drive you crazy not having the hard disk.

They're so cheap now - you may as well just go to a shop - Tesco in the UK and I expect Walmart in the US.
