As a child my mother and I always put the tree up the night of my father's Christmas party at work. He'd come home and see it and love it every year. It was our gift to him...since he hated decorating it.
As an adult..and a retail manager finding time to decorate for Christmas can be tricky for me. We have started doing it on Thanksgiving. I'll bring everything out of storage Wednesday night and put the fake tree up (allergies eliminated the real tree). While we're finishing making dinner, and after eating we'll get all the decorations on the tree and mantle.
All decorations MUST be gone before New Year's Eve.

I put my Christmas decorations up the weekend following Thanksgiving! I have an artificial tree - but only because it breaks my heart to see the live ones thrown away at the curb. I know its silly, but I am sentimental. Have a very merry Christmas. The longer your decorations are up, the more you get to enjoy them.

I usually buy a real tree and after Christmas use it to recycle (in Louisiana it helps to preserve our wetlands, and helps the fish in the water for oxygen.)
I put our Christmas tree up the day after Thanksgiving while my kids are home from school, and it is a tradition that they look forward to.
