My best answer to this would be West Coast Rock, where groups like The Eagles used country and bluegrass roots for their songs and overlaid it with rockier arrangements.

Good examples of this would be,

Lyin' Eyes
Desperado
Take It Easy

The old Southern Rock of the 70's was a blend of country and rock. People like Charlie Daniels crossed over a lot. The Eagles and other similar bands back then were almost considered country. Then there was the country/folk music of John Denver.
To me, today's country is country/pop - a whole new genre.

Many musicologists say that Rockabilly began at Sun Studios in Memphis when Elvis Presley and Sam Phillips combined rhythm and blues with country western music. Rock, as an established form and Country Music found each other with bands like The Grateful Dead, The Alman Brothers, Bob Dylan and The Band.
