probably your mic sucks...

buy a shure sm58 for 50$ off ebay if you want to hear yourself good. Also, if your recording on your computer, make sure your mic volume isn't too high, or else it'll clip parts of the wave off and it'll sound bad.

I suggest audacity because it's free and you can see if your clipping the waves.

Humm ...maybe you are comparing your home recording to a professionally done CD? If this is the case, keep in mind that these things can cost around $30,000 to make and they are made with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of recording equipment. One of the main pieces of equipment is a pitch correcter for vocals. This effect will take a little (or big) part of a note that you sang badly and bend it up to pitch. This is why a lot of big pop singers sound perfect when they are actually no more talented than anyone else. Well... maybe they are better looking but they are NOT better singers.

The reason why some home recordings sound bad is the lack of good equipment and lack of recording experience. They are not always bad though. I do it in my spare time.

You need to record your voice in a room with good 'reverb' such as a soundproof room (you can soundproof any room by putting empty egg cartons on the walls). Or maybe record in a bathroom or a basement. Notice how good you sound in the shower? ;-) good luck
