I want to put a section on a website where visitors can review and rate their favorite albums, and then have a summary page which lists the top 5 along with a picture of their album cover artwork. Is this illegal? I assume not, but would appreciate some advice. Thanks :)

Hmm, I wouldn't think so. As long as you put that it isn't your band, or something like that.

For what you are wanting to do, no, it's perfectly legal. If you are using the bands artwork to somehow make money, than yes, it would be a copyright violation.
I would suggest however to make sure and clearly state which band and album the artwork is from to give due credit to the artist if possible.

BTW, Tool's "10,000 Days" artwork has set the bar pretty high on album artwork. Check it out if you have not already.

Erotic Diarrhea Fantasy (that's how they spell it, I know it's wrong) has a disgusting album cover, plus it's one of the worst albums of all time. I'd never ever recommend it. BQ. British indie BQ2. I can't just bring it down to one, there are loads of bands that I really don't like BQ3. Vivaldi, for people who don't have nice handwriting.

I don't think it is become you're not using it to make money, copywrite laws , don't prohibited the showing of an Artist work, you're not stealing or claiming it as yours just a rating thing.

You shouldn't really do it but neither should the thousands of others who do! As long as you use it in it's original form without manipulating it for your own ends and don't try and pass it off as your own design then I don't think you'll end up in shackles for it.

Under the 'exact' circumstances you have descibed, this would be considered fair-use and would be perfectly legal for you to do so. :-) Have fun and good luck

Well if you don't have their permission, yes. If you're using it to promote CD sales or something they'd let it slide.
