This is a personal question. Last year I went to the emergency room with a bladder infection. Which isnt very serious, but is very uncomfortable and painful. When asked why I was there, i told them exactly what i had but accordingly they did urine tests to be exact. The doctor then came back with the results of the urine test and then told me i was pregnant. Being only 19 years old and very unaware that it was even an option i sat alone in the ER room hysterical. A nurse then came in and drew blood to see how far along the pregnancy was and asked many questions regarding it. An hour later the doctor came back and said, "Bad news is you have a urinary tract infection, good news is your not pregnant, the woman in the lab marked the wrong box." So he drew up a prescription and sent me on my way". Now, when the bill came it had 3 pregnancy tests at $75 dollars each, the blood work, and other tests expenses that were never needed. I havent payed the bill yet and im not sure if i should.

If i were you I would call the hospital and talk to someone in patient accounts. i had a friend who was told they had a brain anurism (sp?) and they shipped him to another hospital etc etc and racked up alot of bills and the wife called and ended up they didnt have to pay it. Chances are you will have to pay for the first one though, it was part of your treatment.

wow....what a sad story. I can understand how frightened you were.

Emergency rooms are understaffed. I avoid the ER, unless it is a Life or Death situation. Mainly because of situations as you have described.

Firstly, I believe that the ER Physician should have given you the option of seeing your Family Physician concerning The Pregnancy situation.

The Physician should have just treated the Symptoms of the Bladder Infection.

Suggestion: Call the Hospital Billing department, and put the account in Dispute. However, they may determine that you gave permission to have the Pregnancy Tests. You are over 18 years old and considered an adult.

Good Luck to you.

It was the hospital mistake and I don't think you should have to pay. I would call the billing office at the hospital and explain and request that they take the charges off. I was once put through some medical tests due to the mistake of a doctor and then they had the nerve to send me a bill. I called his office and explained that I did not feel I should pay for his mistake and the charges were taken off. I hope this helps you too!

If u have insurance, I would argue the bill and tell them why. If not, u might go to the billing departmrnt and tell them u need to speak to someone about the bill. Refuse to pay it and tell them why. U should not have to pay for tests done bcuz of a hospital employee's mistake. I once had a very uncomfortable procedure done, and then the hospital misplaced the results and would not turn them over to my dr. I went to billing and told them that if there were no results, I would not pay for the test. They quickly found the results. U have to be ur own advocate. Speak up.

The only tests you shouldn't have to pay for are the additional pregnancy tests, and the hcg titer (the test to see how far along you were), or any tests related entirely to the alleged pregnancy. The initial urinalysus and urine preg. test were prefectly acceptable and routine.

I would call the billing department and explain the situation.
